What is Dental Aesthetics?
When people smile, teeth become the main point of attention as a part of the face. Therefore, dental aesthetics is an important determinant for dental care, especially to enhance self-confidence in social situations. As the teeth supplement an aesthetic smile, they provide more confidence, respect and admiration while demonstrating good dental health.

- To reshape the anterior region with appropriate lip and face aesthetics, in cases involving one or several missing teeth that may be lost due to different causes
- To plan prostheses that are intended to restore the old wrinkles of the lip and cheek muscles and deformed facial areas, caused by advanced age, by assessing the size of the jawbone and vertically adjusting upper and lower jaws
- To plan dental, lip, and cheek aesthetics in accordance with facial aesthetics, as a result of accidents involving teeth loss and jaw fractures as well as loss of substances
…dental aesthetics procedures are implemented.
Before the whitening process, there should be no bruising, gum removal, gingivitis, or tooth wear. In such cases, all necessary treatments should be done first and then the whitening process would be initiated. The reason behind discolouration should be determined before bleaching. The appropriate type of whitening process would be selected accordingly.
The treatment is applied on the teeth that lost their vitality. If teeth have been exposed to trauma earlier or if discolouration has occurred after root canal treatment, whitening is implemented by placing gel inside the teeth. 35% perhydrol solution is used on canal-treated teeth and the process is continued with replacements in necessary intervals, until the desired whiteness is reached.
The whitening paste is applied on the teeth and activated with the light source by the dentist. The applied gel is a caustic superoxide substance; hence, temporary spotting may occur in the surrounding soft tissues. Therefore, lips are isolated before treatment and gums are covered with a special light barrier for protection. If the whitening is performed with a standard lightening device, the session lasts approximately 30-45 minutes and the result can be observed immediately. The length of treatment depends the patient’s desired degree of whiteness, with the consideration of a method that would not cause damage on the teeth. Usually sessions are performed on every other day, with three sessions in total.
If the light source is a laser device, the whitening treatment can be achieved in a single one-hour session. The treatment has no impact on the filling or the coverage of the overlay process. Therefore, such teeth should be retreated/renewed accordingly to the colour obtained following the whitening process. The durability of the whitening of teeth depends on time and the daily habits of the patient. Hence, the process requires renewal at regular intervals.
No long-term complications were found following this whitening procedure, which can also be considered relatively simple for the dentist to practise. Therefore, this straightforward procedure can provide the bright smile everyone can make shine, without feeling the need to hide it.
